The original prototype (s) went missing and the only available evidence of its existence was a photographic plate from the 1950s which shows the Mare Nostrum in a three quarter view.It was based on drawings in their files and used neither the Luminor nor the earlier Radiomir cases: The Mare Nostrum, the company’s first-ever chronograph. Panerai Firenze (as some call the pre-Richemont incarnation) created a 42mm facsimile of the drawings in their archives that survived the 1966 flood in Florence, given the identification . So, approx. 1700 Pre-A watches were produced, including the Mare Nostrum. Nobody really knows how many of each were actually made (001, 002, 003, 004, 009, 010). Although there was a healthy amount of Pre-A models produced, very few appear for sale, and even fewer in excellent condition with box & papers. Inspired by the legendary Panerai Mare Nostrum, the first chronograph produced by the brand in the 1940s or 1950s for the Italian Navy, comes the new Panerai Mare Nostrum PAM 716 with a stainless steel case measuring 42 mm in diameter and powered by a non-in-house calibre.
It is instead the brand’s first chronograph, a Mare Nostrum, originally designed specifically for naval officers to keep track of nautical miles and other important data on the deck of a ship. Despite its origin, the watch never made it past the prototype stage.
Still, these first watches were beasts — at 52 mm in thick steel cases, with complicated green dials, and with a unique configuration of various dial and case elements, its obvious why Panerai is hearkening back to this design once again after first reviving it .
